HOW TO SEW A ZIP POCKET TUTORIAL

Youtube link -->  OR     Instagram

Step 1

At the RS of the last piece of Body Lining Panel,

·       Measure 3.0” from the top raw edge of centre seam. Mark the position of the zipper

·       Using the Zip Pocket template, centre the zipper position (the rectangle) onto marked point as shown in photo on the right

Step 2

 ·       transfer the zipper position onto RS of bag lining piece

Step 3.

Centrefold zip pocket lining lengthwise (RST)/  Then transfer ZIP POCKET position onto one side of zip pocket lining only

Step 4.

With both Bag Body Lining and Pocket lining RST, match the position of pocket at both lining pieces together;

·       Pin in place.

·       Stitch along the rectangle area (ie. The zipper area)

Step 5

·    Draw a centre line through both layers of fabric between the two stitching lines, stopping about 1/2″ from the rectangle’s short ends.

·     Then draw a Y shape at both ends (red line in photo below)

Step 6

 ·     Cut a slit through both layers. Then slowly cut the along the drawn lines

Avoid cutting the sewing line when you reached the Y shape.

Step 7

 ·     Pull the pocket fabric through the window to the other side, so you get the pieces to be wrong-sides-together.

·       When you have the lining on the other side, pull on the lining and finger-press the seam to hide the lining part so that it is not visible from the front side. Warm iron if required.

Step 8

 ·     With RS of zipper facing up, centre the zipper under the opening. Pin in place.

·     Change to zipper foot, edgestitch (SA 1/8”) around the zipper opening (dotted line).

Step 9

·      Flip lining panels to the wrong side

·    Fold up the pocket piece up and pin around the top and sides.

·     Fold the bag lining as shown in photo

·   Stitch the pocket top and sides with a SA 3/8” as shown in dotted lines of photos above and right side.

 ·    You will get to the zipper pocket as shown.  Set aside.
